What GTL Means on a Pay Stub

GTL is the abbreviation employers most often use for group-term life insurance. It appears when the employer pays for coverage the tax rules treat as reportable, which raises reported wages even though no extra cash reaches the employee.

01

What the abbreviation stands for

GTL is shorthand for group-term life insurance, a benefit an employer arranges for a group of employees. Employers also label the same idea “Group Term Life,” “GTL Imputed,” or “Imputed Income,” so the wording varies between payroll systems.

The line is not a fee charged to the employee for the policy. It represents the value of employer-paid coverage that federal tax rules treat as reportable wages, which is why it appears alongside earnings rather than as an ordinary purchase.

02

Why it raises taxable wages but not take-home pay

IRS Publication 15-B explains that employer-paid group-term life coverage above a set threshold produces imputed income: a value added to the employee’s reported wages even though no additional money is paid out. The amount depends on the employee’s age and the amount of coverage above that threshold, not on what the employer actually spent.

Because it is a value rather than a payment, many payroll systems add the amount to earnings and then subtract an identical figure further down the statement. The result is a higher gross and higher taxable wage total with net pay unchanged, which is the pattern that most often prompts the question.

  • Increases the wage figures reported for the year
  • Does not increase the amount deposited to the employee
  • Often shown twice: once as earnings and once as an offsetting line
03

How to check the figure on your own statement

Compare the GTL line with the employer’s benefit statement or enrollment record for the same period. Confirm the coverage amount, the period covered, and whether any part of the premium is paid by the employee, since employee-paid coverage is handled differently from employer-paid coverage.

If the amount looks wrong, raise it with the employer or payroll administrator who holds the benefit and payroll records. Questions about how the amount affects an individual tax return belong with the employer or a qualified tax professional, not with a document generator.

04

Recording it on a pay stub you create

If you generate a statement that includes group-term life, enter the value your payroll or benefit records already support and label it clearly enough that an employee can match it to their benefit paperwork. Do not invent a figure to make a total resolve.

Keep the enrollment record, coverage amount, and calculation that produced the number with the rest of the payroll file, so the statement can be explained later without reconstructing it from memory.
