How to Research Pay Stub Requirements by State
State wage-statement and payday rules are not uniform. This research hub shows employers how to identify the right jurisdiction and consult current government material instead of relying on a generic fifty-state claim.
Start with the correct jurisdiction and worker
Identify where the employee performs work, where the employer operates, the worker’s classification, industry, and pay frequency. A rule that applies to one occupation or employer size may not apply to another.
The Department of Labor publishes a state payday table as a research starting point and advises readers to consult the relevant state labor office for official information. Its table was last revised January 1, 2023, so an employer should confirm later changes before relying on it.
Read the current state source
Use the state labor department, legislature, or official administrative-code source. Record the page or citation, the effective date, the date reviewed, and any exceptions that affect the employer.
Look separately at payday frequency, timing, required wage-statement fields, permitted delivery methods, deduction notices, final-pay rules, and retention requirements. These subjects may appear in different statutes or agency materials.
Document the conclusion and review date
Write down which rule the business followed and why it applies. Recheck the source when the law changes, the employee works in another jurisdiction, or the business changes its pay schedule or workforce model.
PayRecordly does not claim that one document layout satisfies every state requirement. Obtain qualified advice when the rule is unclear or the consequences of an error are material.
